Liquid Wind and Uniper have announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement to accelerate the development of eFuel facilities for producing fossil-free eMethanol. The partnership aims to leverage their strengths and competencies to drive the commercial-scale development of eFuel facilities, reduce costs and risks, and develop the supply chain.
Under this collaboration, Liquid Wind and Uniper will explore opportunities for joint facility development, power supply, and offtake of eMethanol, complementing Liquid Wind’s existing development activities.
As a leading European energy business, Uniper views large-scale eFuel production facilities as crucial for advancing the transformation to a low-carbon society. As part of this collaboration, Liquid Wind may provide development services for Uniper’s future eFuel facilities. Conversely, Uniper may supply fossil-free electricity to Liquid Wind’s facilities and procure eMethanol for commercial distribution. This partnership supports Liquid Wind’s strategy to expand eFuel facilities globally.
Claes Fredriksson, CEO and founder of Liquid Wind commented “Decarbonization requires committed collaboration across the value chain to achieve results that contribute to reducing global warming. By entering this strategic partnership, we combine our companies’ strengths to drive execution and enhance the green transition. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with Uniper, initiated back in 2020.”
Johan Svenningsson, Country Chairman of Uniper Sweden added “Together, we can accelerate the necessary transformation through increased cooperation under this strategic partnership. Producing fossil-free eFuels is strategically important for succeeding in the green transformation, particularly in sectors like transportation, including land-based, air-based, and maritime. Sweden’s nearly fossil-free power system provides an excellent foundation, and our partnership with Liquid Wind positions us at the forefront of this development.”
eMethanol, a focus of the partnership, is recognized as vital for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors such as global shipping, which contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Produced through the synthesis of green hydrogen and biogenic carbon dioxide, eMethanol is a versatile, low-carbon liquid fuel that is easy to store, transport, and use.
However, accelerating societal and industrial transformation requires developing and implementing regulations that support new business models for transitioning to fossil-free fuels like eMethanol.
