In a pivotal moment for Lithuania’s energy sector, Höegh Evi, a global leader in marine energy infrastructure solutions, has officially transferred ownership of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Independence to KN Energies and the Lithuanian state. This transfer signifies a critical step in Lithuania’s journey toward energy security and independence, as the nation solidifies control over one of its most vital energy assets.
Key Milestone for Lithuania’s Energy Landscape
The Independence, commissioned by Lithuania in 2014, has been instrumental in transforming the country’s energy strategy. Designed with a regasification capacity capable of meeting the entirety of Lithuania’s natural gas needs, the vessel has not only ensured energy security domestically but has also bolstered regional energy supply chains. The recent transfer of ownership follows an agreement allowing Lithuania to acquire the FSRU by the end of 2024.
“Klaipėda’s LNG terminal stands as a powerful symbol of Lithuania’s political resolve, determination, and commitment to achieving energy independence. It has reshaped our energy landscape and enhanced regional energy security,” stated Gitanas Nausėda, President of Lithuania.
A Decade of Operational Excellence
Under Höegh Evi’s stewardship, the Independence has delivered approximately 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Lithuania and neighboring countries, conducting nearly 500 ship-to-ship operations with an unblemished safety record. This achievement highlights the FSRU’s role as a cornerstone of regional energy infrastructure.
“The acquisition of the FSRU Independence by Lithuania is a proud moment for Höegh Evi. A decade ago, Lithuania’s vision to leverage marine infrastructure for energy security set a powerful example. The Independence is now a cornerstone of the region’s critical energy infrastructure. Höegh Evi is honoured to continue working with KN Energiés to provide Lithuania and its neighbours with a reliable supply of natural gas,” commented Erik Nyheim, President & CEO of Höegh Evi.
Continued Collaboration Between Höegh Evi and KN Energies
Despite the ownership transfer, Höegh Evi’s relationship with Lithuania remains strong. The company will continue to provide technical and operational management of the Independence for at least the next five years, with an option for an additional five-year extension.
“While the ownership of Independence is changing, our decade-long partnership with Höegh Evi remains strong. Hoegh LNG Klaipėda, part of the Höegh Evi group, will continue to provide technical operation and maintenance of the FSRU for the next five years, with an option to extend this cooperation for an additional five years. Over the years, the company has proven to be a reliable and trusted partner, and we are pleased to see this mutually beneficial and growth-oriented partnership continue.,” remarked Darius Šilenskis, CEO of KN Energies.
The Independence’s transition to Lithuanian ownership reinforces the critical role LNG infrastructure plays in enhancing energy security across Europe. For the bunkering industry, this milestone highlights the growing importance of LNG terminals as dual-purpose facilities supporting both energy imports and bunkering operations. Lithuania’s commitment to maintaining this strategic asset underpins the increasing demand for LNG as a cleaner marine fuel and as a key component in the global energy transition.
