HMM Garnet Naming Ceremony

HMM, a leading shipping company, recently hosted a naming ceremony for its groundbreaking 13,000 TEU containership, HMM Garnet, at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries headquarters in Ulsan, Korea.

Underlining its commitment to environmental sustainability, HMM signed a contract in June 2021 to construct twelve 13,000 TEU containerships in collaboration with Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, each building six vessels. HMM Garnet marks the inauguration of this ambitious project.

The new vessels are designed to be LNG-ready, featuring advanced energy-saving technologies to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. A standout feature is the integration of the latest smart ship solution, transmitting operational data in real-time to HMM’s Fleet Control Center, ensuring comprehensive visibility over the fleet.

Kim Kyung Bae, President and CEO of HMM, stated, “We expect our new ships to give us strong environmental credentials and to provide us with the capacity and flexibility in the face of growing competition in the global market.”

Starting February, HMM Garnet will be deployed on the East Coast 1 (EC1) route as part of THE Alliance’s product plan. The port rotation includes Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Yantian, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, and Singapore.

Upon the completion of the twelve 13,000 TEU ships this year, HMM’s fleet capacity is anticipated to reach 1 million TEUs, with large containerships of over 10,000 TEU constituting 80% of the entire fleet. Notably, these vessels will be named after birthstones from January to December, symbolizing HMM’s commitment to making customers’ cargo as valuable as jewelry.
