HMM Green First Methanol Fueled Container Vessel

HMM, a leading global provider of integrated logistics and shipping services, has successfully taken delivery of its first methanol-powered containership, HMM GREEN. The vessel, with a capacity of 9,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), marks a significant milestone in HMM’s commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of the maritime industry.

The delivery of HMM GREEN is the first of a series of nine sister vessels ordered by HMM in February 2023. The ships were constructed by two prominent shipbuilding companies: HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (seven vessels) and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (two vessels). The company plans to gradually take delivery of the remaining eight vessels by the end of next year, as part of its strategic fleet expansion plan.

Methanol-Powered Technology for a Sustainable Future

HMM GREEN is powered by methanol, a cleaner, more sustainable alternative to traditional marine fuels. The vessel will primarily use bio-methanol, a renewable fuel derived from waste resources. Bio-methanol offers several environmental benefits, including a reduction in carbon emissions by up to 65%, the elimination of sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, and a significant cut in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 80%, compared to conventional bunker fuel.

The vessel will take on bio-methanol fuel at the Port of Shanghai, which is one of the global hubs for sustainable fuel bunkering. This move aligns with HMM’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing greener technologies to combat climate change.

Environmental Technologies and Regulatory Compliance

In addition to its use of bio-methanol, HMM GREEN and its sister ships are equipped with advanced environmental technologies designed to meet the stringent requirements of major global ports. This includes compliance with the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime regulations, ensuring that these vessels are ready to meet future emissions reduction targets as part of the European Union’s ambitious plans to decarbonize the shipping industry.

These technological upgrades will ensure that the vessels can operate seamlessly across all major global trade routes without restrictions. HMM’s proactive approach to regulatory compliance and environmental responsibility sets a new standard in the shipping industry.

A Step Toward Net-Zero by 2045

HMM’s commitment to sustainability is a cornerstone of its long-term strategy. According to an official statement from HMM, the delivery of HMM GREEN is a major step in the company’s goal to achieve “Net-Zero by 2045.” The company recognizes the importance of innovation and the adoption of alternative fuels sources in accelerating the transition to a more sustainable maritime industry.

“HMM’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045 remains a top priority for us,” said the HMM official. “The introduction of HMM GREEN will not only contribute to our environmental objectives but also enhance our competitiveness in a rapidly evolving industry. We will continue to explore and adopt various fuel options to meet the demands of a low-carbon future.”

Deployment of HMM GREEN on Key Routes

HMM GREEN will be deployed on HMM’s independently operated FIM (Far East Asia, India, and Mediterranean Sea) service. This service will provide HMM with a key advantage in its commitment to sustainability, as it ensures the company’s operations align with its environmental and business objectives.
