The Halifax Port Authority has secured up to $22.5 million from Transport Canada through the Green Shipping Corridor Program, aimed at preparing the port for the future of sustainable fuels and energy sources. This initiative will support the transition to a greener maritime sector, enhancing both environmental sustainability and supply chain efficiency.
Key Activities Funded by the Grant:
- Risk Assessment for Alternative-Fueled Vessels: A comprehensive assessment will evaluate the viability of hosting vessels powered by alternative fuels, including hydrogen, at the port.
- Electrification and Emissions Reduction: The port will collaborate with partners to invest in electrification efforts and procure equipment designed to reduce emissions and support decarbonization goals.
- Workforce Development: An emphasis will be placed on developing the local workforce to meet the evolving needs of the green shipping industry.
- Exploration of Low-Carbon Fuels: The Halifax Port Authority will explore the adoption of lower-carbon fuels such as hydrogen to help meet decarbonization targets.
- Risk and Feasibility Studies: Foundational work in the form of risk and commercial feasibility studies will be undertaken to plan for the port’s future transformation.
“This is an important project supporting the future for the Port and our competitiveness,” said Fulvio Fracassi, President and CEO of the Halifax Port Authority. “As the global shipping industry continues to take steps to decarbonize, we need to be prepared for the transition. We’re pleased to have been awarded this funding and look forward to embarking on next steps. Thank you to Transport Canada for supporting the Port of Halifax and its partners.”
This funding comes as part of a broader $25 million investment announced by the Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, the Honourable Anita Anand. The investment breakdown includes:
- $22.5 million for the Green Shipping Corridor Program, which will accelerate the development of the Halifax – Hamburg green shipping corridor. This will involve infrastructure improvements, such as the establishment of a hydrogen production facility, the electrification of port equipment, and the acquisition of an electric rail locomotive.
- $2.5 million for the Ship to Shore Crane Infrastructure project, which is designed to relieve supply chain congestion, expand terminal capacity, and enhance efficiency in handling larger vessels.
The Green Shipping Corridor Program supports projects that contribute to establishing green shipping corridors and decarbonizing the marine sector along Canada’s coasts, including the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. By funding industry-led partnerships, the program seeks to incentivize investments in emission-reducing technologies and infrastructure, decrease risks for green shipping investments, and enhance the readiness of Canadian vessel operators to integrate low-carbon and net-zero emission technologies.
“We’re investing in green shipping corridors, supply chain infrastructure, and clean technologies to reduce emissions,” said Minister Anand. “Together, we’re building a sustainable future for transportation, supporting jobs, and driving economic growth in Nova Scotia and beyond.”
This funding builds on ongoing efforts at the Port of Halifax, including an existing memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Port of Hamburg. The Halifax Port Authority is committed to working with its partners to ensure the port remains competitive and ready to support the future of sustainable shipping.
“Transport Canada’s Green Corridor investment will help position the Port of Halifax for the future,” said Fulvio Fracassi. “The funding will support feasibility studies, assessments, new equipment, and workforce development.”
