GT Wings Wind Propulsion UK Grant

GT Wings, a leading innovator in wind propulsion technology, has been awarded a £225,000 grant from the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) under the Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund (SSAF). This grant will significantly boost the development of GT Wings’ pioneering AirWing™ technology, allowing for the integration of AI-driven, self-learning control systems aimed at optimizing performance in real-time.

The funding will support a collaboration between GT Wings, the University of Bath, and Carisbrooke Shipping Ltd, advancing efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry by reducing both fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This project represents a major step forward in sustainable shipping innovation, positioning GT Wings at the forefront of environmental and economic benefits for shipowners and operators worldwide.

The AI-driven system will continuously monitor and adjust the AirWing™’s performance to ensure maximum efficiency, providing shipowners with a sustainable solution to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations. The partnership with Carisbrooke Shipping and academic expertise from the University of Bath will further drive research and development, ultimately leading to practical applications that will enhance vessel efficiency and contribute to the global push for greener shipping practices.

GT Wings expressed gratitude to the Department for Transport and Innovate UK for their support, recognizing this initiative as a pivotal milestone in the journey toward a decarbonized shipping industry. With the backing of this grant, GT Wings is poised to accelerate the rollout of its innovative wind propulsion systems, delivering cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions across the maritime sector.

What is Wind Propulsion?

Wind propulsion is an innovative and sustainable technology that harnesses the power of wind to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport. By utilizing wind-assisted systems such as sails, rotors, or airfoil designs, vessels can generate additional thrust, thereby lessening their reliance on conventional fuel. This not only lowers operational costs but also contributes significantly to the decarbonization of the shipping industry.

As environmental regulations tighten and the demand for greener solutions grows, wind propulsion is emerging as a viable method to enhance vessel efficiency while minimizing the environmental impact of global shipping operations.
