Global Fuel Supply (GFS), a prominent player in the international bunkering industry, has announced its expansion into West Africa with the launch of its first physical supply operation. The move marks a significant milestone for GFS as it strengthens its presence in a region with growing demand for reliable marine fuel services.
The newly chartered bunker tanker, M/V RLO EXPLORER (DWT 5,498), will be positioned at Luanda anchorage in Angola to facilitate bunkering operations. This vessel, with a length of under 100 meters, is particularly well-suited for servicing oil rigs and offshore platforms. Its stainless-steel tanks, capable of being cleaned within 24 hours, ensure maximum operational flexibility, allowing for the efficient transition between different marine fuel types.
The Strategic Importance of Bunkering in West Africa
West Africa has emerged as a critical hub for global shipping and offshore energy operations. With its extensive coastline and proximity to major shipping routes, the region plays a vital role in supporting international trade and energy production. The increasing demand for bunkering services in West Africa underscores the need for efficient and reliable fuel supply solutions to keep vessels operational and minimize downtime. By establishing a strong foothold in Angola, GFS is poised to contribute significantly to the region’s maritime infrastructure while catering to the evolving needs of shipping companies and offshore operators.
Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
As part of its strategic vision, GFS is introducing advanced mass flowmeter technology to ensure accurate fuel measurement during deliveries. This initiative aligns with industry efforts to enhance transparency and prevent discrepancies in bunker transactions. Additionally, the company is rolling out Electronic Bunker Delivery Notes (eBDN), streamlining the documentation process and reducing paper waste. These technological advancements reinforce GFS’s commitment to efficiency, accuracy, and environmental responsibility in the bunkering sector.
Leadership Perspective
Commenting on the expansion, Bijan Shahbaz, Managing Partner and COO of GFS, emphasized the company’s long-term strategy in West Africa:
“We see tremendous opportunity for growth and expansion in the West African market. With some of the most dedicated professionals in the industry, we are fully prepared to add even more value for our customers by delivering a smooth, seamless service that sets new standards in this region.”
By establishing a physical presence in Luanda, GFS aims to offer reliable fuel supply, shorter turnaround times, and enhanced customer support—key factors in serving the dynamic maritime industry in West Africa. The expansion aligns with the company’s broader mission to provide high-quality marine fuel solutions while adapting to evolving operational and environmental demands.
