The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) and Global Energy Trading Pte Ltd (Global Energy), a Singapore-based marine fuel supplier, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly develop a sustainable supply chain for green methanol as a marine fuel. This landmark partnership aligns the expertise of both companies, aiming to make green methanol widely accessible to the shipping industry as part of its decarbonization journey.
This collaboration is strategically designed to integrate Towngas’ advanced production capabilities with Global Energy’s robust logistics and supply chain management. Together, they will provide a comprehensive end-to-end solution that ensures efficient production, distribution, and bunkering of green methanol across Asia’s major and regional ports.
Vision for Decarbonization
Mr. Sham Man-fai, Chief Operating Officer – Green Fuels & Chemicals at Towngas, highlighted the significance of this initiative:
“This partnership represents a significant milestone in the green transition of maritime fuel supply. By combining Towngas’s strengths in green methanol production with Global Energy’s supply chain management and market operation expertise, we are creating a robust platform to accelerate the shipping industry’s decarbonization journey.”
Adding to this, Mr. Loh Hong-leong, Managing Director of Global Energy, stated:
“This collaboration is synergy in motion; together, we are creating a one-stop bunkering solution to ensure green methanol is more accessible to the maritime industry. Beyond supply, we could offer advisory on compliance and in managing the benefits of using green methanol.”
Towngas’ Green Methanol Leadership
Towngas operates a state-of-the-art methanol production facility in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, which converts biomass and municipal waste into green methanol using proprietary technology. This facility is the first in China to achieve ISCC EU and ISCC PLUS certifications, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.
The company has outlined ambitious expansion plans, including new production bases in Inner Mongolia, the Greater Bay Area, and Hainan. These developments aim to achieve an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes of green fuel and chemical supplies.
Global Energy’s Expertise in Methanol Bunkering
Global Energy is a trailblazer in the bunkering industry, being the first company in Singapore to own and operate dedicated methanol bunkering tankers. The company has already conducted multiple methanol bunkering operations and, in 2024 alone, delivered over 4.7 million tonnes of marine fuels.
With its comprehensive range of services, including advisory support on compliance and sustainable practices, Global Energy is well-positioned to support the global shipping industry’s shift to low-carbon solutions.

The partnership between Towngas and Global Energy marks a significant step toward establishing a sustainable green methanol marine fuel supply chain, setting the stage for meaningful progress in the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts.
