Glander International Bunkering‘s Geneva office has taken a significant step towards promoting carbon insetting within the shipping industry by joining the Smart Freight Centre (SFC), a non-profit organization focused on decarbonizing freight transport.
The Geneva office became a member of SFC in early June, marking a strategic move to collaborate with the organization’s network and the Sustainable Freight Buyers Alliance to further maritime decarbonization.
The Smart Freight Centre is dedicated to driving collective efforts to accelerate the decarbonization of the freight industry. By joining this network, Glander International Bunkering aims to be at the forefront of discussions around zero-emission logistics and the evolving regulatory landscape.
Emmanuel Charvier, New Fuels Advisor at the Geneva office, emphasized the Company’s commitment to sustainability, stating “Glander International Bunkering will be adding our voice to discussions around the procurement of zero-emission logistics and how to navigate the regulatory landscape. We will also be involved in SFC projects and training to reduce the challenges and complexities of GHG reduction.”
Charvier further highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing global emissions. “Collective responsibility is the key to driving collective action for emissions reduction,” he noted, underscoring the need for collaboration across the industry to achieve meaningful progress.
The pressure on companies to reduce CO2 emissions within their supply chains is mounting, particularly as the shipping industry faces new regulatory demands. The recent inclusion of shipping in the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) has added urgency to the sector’s need to limit emissions from ships. In this context, carbon insetting offers a viable solution for both shippers and carriers to meet their environmental targets.
Carbon insetting allows cargo owners, who are seeking to reduce their scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, to invest in decarbonizing the shipping sector. By partnering with shipowners who are adopting new, lower-emission fuels, cargo owners can contribute to the cost of these fuels and, in return, claim the associated environmental benefits. This approach not only helps cargo owners achieve their own sustainability goals but also supports the broader transition to cleaner shipping practices.
Charvier explained “That’s where we are putting our efforts so this eventually becomes a norm until we reach net-zero in shipping.” His statement reflects the company’s long-term vision for the widespread adoption of insetting as a standard practice in the shipping industry.
The carbon insetting system is already gaining traction among leading container lines, and it is expected to expand further across other cargo shipping segments in the coming years. Initiatives like these represent a transformative early step in reducing the shipping industry’s GHG emissions to zero.
