Gasum bio-LNG Bunkering for Equinor Tugboats

Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, has commenced the bunkering of bio-LNG for Equinor’s tugboats Borgøy and Bokn, reinforcing the collaboration between the two companies in advancing sustainable marine fuel solutions. The first successful bio-LNG bunkering operation for Borgøy took place at Kårstø, Norway, on February 14, 2024, and deliveries will continue throughout 2025.

Strengthening the Equinor-Gasum Partnership

The latest agreement marks an important milestone in the ongoing partnership between Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, and Equinor, Norway’s global energy giant. Both companies have ambitious sustainability goals, with Equinor aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The use of bio-LNG in Equinor’s tugboats aligns with its strategy to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime sector.

In 2024, Gasum supplied bio-LNG to Equinor’s chartered platform supply vessel Island Crusader in the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. Extending bio-LNG as the fuel of choice for the tugboats Borgøy and Bokn represents a significant step in reducing the carbon footprint of Equinor’s fleet operations.

Bio-LNG: A Fully Renewable Maritime Fuel

Liquefied biogas (Bio-LNG) is a fully renewable fuel with an average life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction of 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels. Gasum produces biogas from biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and industrial and agricultural side streams, making it a sustainable energy source for the shipping industry.

A key advantage of bio-LNG is its full compatibility with LNG, allowing it to be interchangeably used or mixed at any ratio. This flexibility makes bio-LNG an attractive option for shipowners looking to transition toward cleaner fuels without requiring modifications to existing LNG-powered vessels.

Gasum’s Renewable Gas Expansion Plan

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, Gasum aims to provide 7 terawatt-hours (TWh) of renewable gas annually by 2027. This initiative is projected to achieve a total CO2 emissions reduction of 1.8 million tons per year across its customer base.

By increasing bio-LNG supply to Equinor’s vessels, Gasum is demonstrating its commitment to delivering low-carbon solutions for the maritime sector. The latest collaboration further strengthens the role of bio-LNG as a viable pathway toward decarbonizing shipping and enhancing energy security.

Equinor Partnership

Equinor is a Norway-based global energy company committed to leading the energy transition by providing low-carbon solutions for the shipping industry. With a strong focus on sustainability, Equinor aims to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050. The company actively invests in alternative fuels, renewable energy sources, and efficiency measures to reduce its environmental impact. Equinor is dedicated to pioneering initiatives like bio-LNG bunkering, wind-assisted propulsion, and carbon capture technologies to promote cleaner maritime operations and accelerate the decarbonization of global shipping.
