G2 Ocean, the world’s largest shipping operator in the Open Hatch segment, is set to enhance its fleet with the addition of two new 82,300 deadweight ton (dwt) ammonia/methanol-ready Open Hatch vessels. These vessels, aimed at further boosting the company’s capacity to serve customers with increased efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability, are scheduled for delivery in October 2028 and January 2029.
The new vessels will be provided by Gearbulk, a key shareholder and pool partner of G2 Ocean. They are sister vessels to the Pulpmax series, which were ordered earlier this year and will be constructed in the same shipyard. These additions are a testament to G2 Ocean’s commitment to expanding its fleet with modern, eco-friendly vessels that meet the evolving demands of the shipping industry.
This fleet expansion is part of a larger initiative by G2 Ocean to incorporate advanced dual-fuel vessels into its operations. In addition to the two new vessels from Gearbulk, the company previously announced that Grieg Maritime Group, another shareholder and pool partner, will supply four ammonia-ready vessels by 2026. Gearbulk will also deliver an additional four ammonia-ready vessels in the first half of 2027. Once these vessels are integrated into the fleet, G2 Ocean will operate a total of ten dual-fuel 82,300 dwt Open Hatch vessels.
Arthur English, CEO of G2 Ocean, expressed his enthusiasm for the fleet expansion, stating “The design of these vessels strengthens our service offering and will help us meet evolving customer requirements. We very much appreciate the support of Gearbulk and Grieg Maritime Group on these newbuilds. With the ten Pulpmax vessels ordered, we can take important steps on our decarbonisation journey, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050.”
