Helsinki, Finland | October 30, 2025 – Elenger, the largest private energy company in the Baltic-Finnish region, has confirmed it has begun supplying liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) to Tallink’s newest vessel, the MyStar. This operational milestone moves the Finnish-Estonian route further toward decarbonization, as bio-LNG—produced from renewable raw materials—significantly reduces shipping emissions and supports regional climate goals.

The Transition to Renewable Fuel
The commencement of supply formalizes the next step in the long-term partnership between Elenger and Tallink. Tallink, a regional leader in adopting cleaner fuels, began using LNG technology in 2017 and is now progressing toward the wider use of biomethane.
Search results confirm that MyStar had already completed six successful bio-LNG bunkering operations in the months leading up to this formal announcement, demonstrating a smooth cooperation between the partners and a phased transition toward the renewable fuel.
“Through its sustainable choices, Tallink sets an example for other operators in the Baltic Sea, and Elenger has supported this long-term development from the very beginning. Tallink adopted LNG technology back in 2017 and is now transitioning toward the broader use of biomethane-based natural gas,” says Margus Kaasik, CEO of Elenger Group.
Full Fleet Decarbonization Goal
Tallink Grupp plans to rapidly scale up the use of bio-LNG across its most important shuttle fleet.
Paavo Nõgene, CEO of Tallink Grupp, adds that the company plans to switch entirely to bio-LNG on both the MyStar and Megastar vessels within a year. “This also allows our customers to reduce their own environmental impact by choosing Tallink,” Nõgene notes.
The bio-LNG supplied by Elenger is certified, guaranteeing that the fuel is produced from renewable raw materials and meets stringent international sustainability standards. While bio-LNG is more expensive than fossil LNG, the company notes that its benefits of lower CO2 quota requirements help balance the operational costs.
Natural gas produced from biomethane has already established itself as a cleaner fuel in road transport and industry, and its use in maritime transport is now steadily increasing, particularly in preparation for the compliance requirements of FuelEU Maritime.
