Fincantieri and Viking have announced contracts for the construction of two new cruise ships, modeled after the successful features of previous vessels built by Fincantieri for Viking. These new ships are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029. The agreement, pending financing and other conditions, is considered Large.
The ships will be constructed in compliance with the latest environmental standards and navigation regulations, featuring state-of-the-art safety systems.
They will incorporate innovations from the ongoing collaboration between Fincantieri and Viking, focusing on eco-friendly marine fuels and sustainable zero-emission power generation systems. Designed for the small cruise ship segment, each vessel will have a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and will accommodate 998 passengers across 499 cabins.
This contract highlights the cruise market’s strong recovery, with passenger numbers returning to pre-pandemic levels, positively impacting Fincantieri’s commercial pipeline. It also underscores the robust and enduring partnership between Fincantieri and Viking, which began in 2012 and has now resulted in a total of 20 vessels, including two expedition units built by Fincantieri’s subsidiary, Vard.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, remarked “This order further cements our relationship with Viking and establishes Fincantieri as the partner of choice for ship owners looking to build vessels fit for both current and future energy sources. Together, Fincantieri and Viking are leading the shipping industry on the path to net zero. With this contract, Fincantieri confirms its strong order pipeline and its reputation as a long-term partner of excellence within the cruise sector, as stated in our 2023-27 Industrial Plan.”
For Fincantieri, a large cruise agreement is an agreement representing a value between euro 500 million and euro 1 billion.
