Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) has reaffirmed its commitment to decarbonization by signing an agreement with bound4blue to install three 22-meter eSAIL® systems on an MR Tanker newbuild from New Times Shipbuilding, China.

The autonomous Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) are slated for installation in late 2025. This collaboration marks the second partnership between EPS and bound4blue in 2024, further integrating cutting-edge technologies into EPS’s sustainable shipping strategy.

Continuing the Green Journey

EPS’s decision to adopt eSAIL® technology follows its successful retrofitting of three eSAILs® on Pacific Sentinel, a 50,000 dwt vessel, earlier this year. The innovative system enhances vessel efficiency by generating aerodynamic thrust, significantly reducing fuel consumption and emissions while aiding compliance with international regulations such as FuelEU Maritime, CII, and EU ETS.

Daniel Mann, Chief Commercial Officer at bound4blue, emphasized the transformative potential of the collaboration“We’re thrilled to be collaborating once again with EPS, one of the leaders at the forefront of the shipping industry’s green transformation. Their adoption of our eSAIL® technology not only reflects their commitment to greener shipping but also paves the way for broader industry adoption of Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems.”

Mirtcho Spassov, Decarbonisation Manager at EPS, highlighted the project’s significance “We’re excited to be working alongside bound4blue and New Times Shipbuilding to install our first wind-assisted propulsion system on a newbuild vessel. This project represents a significant milestone in our decarbonisation journey and lays the foundation for wider adoption of WAPS technology across our fleet.”

Driving Industry Adoption

The eSAIL® system, which has received DNV Type Approval, is gaining traction among global shipping operators due to its simplicity, reliability, and cost efficiency. With a flexible design suitable for both newbuilds and retrofits, the technology is compatible with a variety of vessel types, including tankers, bulkers, Ro-Ros, cruises, ferries, gas carriers, and general cargo ships.

In 2024, bound4blue expanded its project portfolio from four to fourteen, demonstrating increasing demand for its sustainable propulsion solutions.

This latest collaboration underscores EPS’s ongoing efforts to lead by example, driving forward the adoption of innovative technologies that contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future for maritime transportation.
