Neste, a global leader in renewable fuels, and Eckerö Line, a Finnish shipping company operating between Helsinki and Tallinn, have strengthened their commitment to reducing emissions from maritime transport. The ongoing collaboration between the two companies marks a key step in the transition towards lower-emission shipping, with Eckerö Line becoming the first Finnish company to incorporate Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ into its commercial maritime fleet.

A Green Leap in Maritime Transport

Eckerö Line, which provides both freight and passenger services in the Baltic Sea, has made significant strides in reducing its carbon footprint. By replacing part of the conventional fossil fuel used in its vessels with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, the company is well-positioned to meet the 2% emission reduction requirement outlined in the new FuelEU Maritime Regulation, which came into effect at the beginning of 2025. This regulation aims to promote the use of lower-emission fuels in the maritime industry, helping the sector achieve its climate goals.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel™, produced using 100% waste and residue raw materials, has been shown to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 90% over its entire lifecycle when compared to traditional fossil diesel. This fuel not only helps Eckerö Line reduce its operational emissions but also aligns with the company’s broader sustainability goals.

Seamless Transition with Neste MY Renewable Diesel™

What sets Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ apart is its chemical composition, which is similar to that of fossil diesel. This makes it compatible with existing diesel-powered vessels, without the need for any additional investments or modifications to the fleet or fuel infrastructure. This ease of transition is a key factor in Eckerö Line’s decision to adopt the renewable fuel for its vessels operating on the Gulf of Finland.

“We are very pleased with how Neste MY Renewable Diesel meets our needs. It allows us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our vessels while meeting the requirements of the FuelEU Maritime regulation,” said Taru Keronen, CEO of Eckerö Line. “By using this renewable fuel, we can continue to provide efficient and sustainable services between Helsinki and Tallinn, all while supporting the broader shift towards more environmentally friendly maritime transport.”

A Shared Vision for a Sustainable Future

Neste, which has long been committed to mitigating climate change and driving the circular economy, is proud to partner with Eckerö Line in this important initiative.

Joni Pihlström, Neste’s Director of Corporate Sales in Finland and the Baltics, emphasized the importance of reducing emissions across all transport sectors, particularly maritime. “The need to curb climate change is greater than ever. It is great that with Neste’s renewable fuel, we can support the transition of maritime transport towards lower-emission solutions. Eckerö Line is a trailblazer in this regard,” Pihlström said.

Neste’s MY Renewable Diesel™ provides a scalable solution that helps shipping companies meet emerging environmental regulations while contributing to the overall reduction of carbon emissions in the transport sector.
