From 08 May 2024 to 05 July 2024, Maritec Pte Ltd (CTI-Maritec), a renowned marine fuel testing laboratory, tested twenty-two fuel samples representing HSFO and VLSFO deliveries from various suppliers across the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. The results revealed significant concentrations of Aluminium and Silicon (Al+Si), ranging from 40 mg/kg to 177 mg/kg.
Out of these samples, two showed Al+Si levels exceeding 100 mg/kg, with one sample registering at 68 mg/kg. While the majority of samples met ISO8217:2005 (80 ppm) and ISO8217:2010/2017 specifications (72 ppm as per ISO4259), high Catfines content remained prevalent. Additionally, many samples exhibited elevated density, TSP, and CCAI levels.
Aluminium and Silicon are abrasive solids commonly found in fuels, posing risks of accelerated wear on fuel system components, piston rings, and cylinder liners. Engine manufacturers typically recommend a maximum limit of 15 mg/kg of Al+Si at the engine inlet. Efficient fuel purification systems are essential for mitigating these risks, and monitoring Al+Si concentrations pre- and post-centrifugation provides critical insights into purification system efficacy.
High TSP levels in the fuels tested may contribute to increased sludge formation, particularly in purifiers and filters. Furthermore, elevated CCAI values can lead to ignition and combustion challenges.
Recommendations from CTI-Maritec
- Collect fuel samples from various points within the fuel system, including the fuel oil tank transfer pump, before and after centrifugation, service tank, and post-filter samples, to assess cleaning efficiency.
- Prior to bunkering in the ARA region, request a Certificate of Quality to ensure adherence to fuel quality standards.
CTI-Maritec offers comprehensive insights into bunker quality across different regions and is available for further consultation.
