CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics, has reached an extraordinary milestone by completing its 100th LNG bunkering operation at the Shanghai Yangshan Terminal. This landmark event, achieved in partnership with Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), underscores the companies’ commitment to sustainable shipping practices and sets a new record for the largest single LNG refueling volume in China—11,500 m³.
The 100th operation featured the LNG-powered CMA CGM PATAGONIA, refueled during a seamless SIMOPS (Simultaneous Operations) process that integrated cargo handling and vessel maintenance. This double achievement demonstrates CMA CGM’s and SIPG’s ability to execute complex logistics efficiently while contributing to the shipping industry’s energy transition.
A Journey from the First SIMPOS LNG Bunkering in 2022
The accomplishment comes just two years after CMA CGM and SIPG completed their first LNG bunkering operation at Yangshan Port in March 2022, marking the debut of ship-to-ship LNG SIMOPS in China. During that inaugural operation, the CMA CGM SYMI, a 15,000 TEU LNG-powered vessel, was refueled by Haigang Weilai, the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel with a capacity of 20,000 m³. The operation was part of a 10-year agreement signed in January 2022, under which SIPG committed to providing LNG bunkering services for CMA CGM’s vessels operating on the PRX line between China and the U.S.
This collaboration was hailed as a breakthrough in China’s shipping and logistics industry. SIPG’s bonded LNG bunkering project received strong support from the Shanghai Municipal Government, which recognized its potential to enhance the city’s position as a leading international shipping hub while promoting green and low-carbon development in the maritime sector.
Key Achievements and Impact
- Largest Single Refueling Volume: The 100th bunkering achieved a record-setting volume of 11,500 m³ of LNG, solidifying Shanghai Yangshan Terminal’s role as a leader in LNG refueling operations.
- Seamless SIMOPS Integration: The operation integrated simultaneous cargo handling and maintenance, reflecting advanced coordination between CMA CGM and SIPG teams.
- Green Shipping Milestones: Since 2022, CMA CGM and SIPG have consistently expanded LNG bunkering capabilities, driving the adoption of cleaner fuels in international shipping.
Strategic Significance
CMA CGM’s continued investments in LNG-powered vessels and bunkering operations are pivotal to its long-term vision of decarbonizing the shipping industry. The company’s collaboration with SIPG not only enhances operational efficiency but also strengthens Shanghai’s position as an eco-friendly maritime hub.
SIPG, as a world-class terminal operator, has made significant strides in promoting sustainability, including initiatives like LNG bunkering, cold-ironing technology, and diesel-oil transitions. These efforts align with China’s national “dual carbon” goals and underscore SIPG’s leadership in green port development.
