ClassNK Guidelines Alternative fuels

ClassNK, a leading ship classification society, has announced the release of its latest edition, “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels (Edition 3.0)”, aimed at ensuring safety standards for ships utilizing various alternative fuels. This new edition expands its scope to include guidelines for ships powered by hydrogen, alongside methanol, ethanol, LPG, and ammonia.

These guidelines serve to outline comprehensive safety requirements, covering aspects such as installation, controls, safety devices, and more. The objective is to mitigate risks to ships, crew members, and the environment associated with the adoption of alternative fuels.

Incorporating feedback from the IMO Subcommittee on Carriage of Cargoes and insights gained from design reviews, ClassNK has introduced additional requirements specific to hydrogen-fueled ships under Part D of the guidelines. These new provisions address potential hazards associated with hydrogen fuel, such as explosion prevention and mitigation measures and protocols for handling fuel leakage, enhancing the safety of these vessels.

ClassNK, as part of its commitment to facilitating the industry’s transition to zero-emission shipping, offers comprehensive support through its “ClassNK Transition Support Services”. These services aim to assist customers in smoothly transitioning to alternative-fueled ships by providing necessary safety requirements and design guidance.

The guidelines, including the latest edition 3.0, are accessible for download through ClassNK’s website upon registration.
