Hong Kong | December 15, 2025 – In a landmark achievement signaling its readiness for the next generation of maritime propulsion, the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC) has successfully concluded its inaugural Pilot Training Course on Ammonia as a Marine Fuel. This pivotal development firmly positions Anglo-Eastern at the vanguard of preparing the global seafaring workforce for the industry’s critical shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
The specialized, intensive two-day programme, held on 24–25 November 2025, drew an impressive cohort of 26 participants from across India, representing a comprehensive cross-section of shipboard ranks. Masters, Chief Engineers, senior officers, and junior engineers convened to engage in this crucial training, creating a dynamic, collaborative learning environment that mirrors the integrated operational teams found onboard vessels.
The diversity of professional backgrounds underscored the shared responsibility inherent in safely transitioning to and operating ammonia-fuelled ships. Further emphasizing this collaborative spirit, Anglo-Eastern teams based in Australia and Delhi actively participated, strengthening cross-regional alignment on future fuel readiness and operational best practices.

Bridging Theory and Practice: Hands-on Readiness
The curriculum was meticulously designed to provide essential training focused on the core pillars of ammonia as a marine fuel: safety, operational readiness, and the unique challenges and opportunities presented by this alternative fuel.
The training moved seamlessly from classroom instruction to unparalleled hands-on experience at the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA) in Karjat. This practical phase leveraged the Academy’s globally unique and cutting-edge LNG and Ammonia bunkering skid.
This state-of-the-art facility is an advanced asset purpose-built for the practical simulation of critical bunkering operations. It fully integrates:
- Transfer pipelines
- Safety interlocks
- Inerting systems
- Emergency shutdown functionality (ESD)
- Gas detection interfaces
- Fully operational controls
This sophisticated simulation environment allows seafarers to practice key procedures, from routine operations to emergency scenarios and operational variances, in a safe and controlled setting. The ability to simulate these conditions ensures that trainees acquire the competence and confidence essential for future service aboard ammonia-powered vessels.
Strategic Preparation for a Multi-Fuel Future
The successful completion of this pilot course is an integral part of Anglo-Eastern’s strategic preparation for taking delivery of its first ammonia-fuelled ship.
Aalok Sharma, Group Director of Training at Anglo-Eastern, highlighted the significance of the initiative “This pilot course is a logical and deliberate step as we prepare to take delivery of our first ammonia-fuelled ship. As we navigate our journey toward the successful adoption of a multi-fuel future in the maritime industry, we move forward with both pride and caution. Our goal is to ensure that we continually learn while we teach, cultivating an environment of growth and innovation.”
Aalok Sharma further emphasized the commitment to crew-centric development: “The team has dedicated significant time and resources to upskill, keeping a strong focus on the invaluable feedback from seafarers—those who will be at the forefront of these operations. We as an industry must continue to seek these essential insights, as we refine our approach and enhance the training programs.”
Pioneered by Prasad Nayak, General Manager of Training at Anglo-Eastern, this comprehensive programme, with its hands-on bunkering simulations, underscores the Group’s firm commitment to innovation, safety, and sustainability. By proactively training its personnel, Anglo-Eastern is ensuring a smooth, safe, and responsible transition to alternative fuels, reaffirming its undisputed position at the forefront of the global maritime decarbonisation drive.
