ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), a leading global energy maritime logistics provider, has taken delivery of its first newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, ‘Al Shelila,’ from China’s Jiangnan Shipyard. Delivered two months ahead of schedule, this state-of-the-art vessel marks a significant milestone in ADNOC L&S’ strategic fleet expansion.
LNG Carrier ‘Al Shelila’ boasts a capacity of 175,000m³, surpassing the 137,000m³ capacity of ADNOC L&S’ current LNG carriers. The vessel is equipped with advanced energy-efficient technologies, including dual-fuel LNG engines designed to reduce methane emissions by up to 50%. This underscores ADNOC L&S’ commitment to sustainability and aligns with global efforts to adopt cleaner energy solutions.
The vessel will immediately commence operations under a charter agreement with a prominent global energy trader, further enhancing ADNOC L&S’ position in the global LNG market.
The delivery ceremony in Shanghai was attended by distinguished dignitaries and industry leaders, including:
- H.E. Muhannad Sulaiman Al Naqbi, UAE Consul General in Shanghai
- Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC L&S
- Lin Ou, Chairman of Jiangnan Shipyard
- Representatives from Wanhua Chemical Group, CSTC, DNV, and GTT
Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC L&S emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership with Jiangnan Shipyard, stating, “‘Al Shelila’ symbolizes strength and grace, reflecting our maritime heritage. This delivery reinforces UAE-China industrial ties and supports our strategy to meet the global demand for natural gas, a vital lower-carbon energy source.”
Fleet expansion for future growth
ADNOC L&S awarded Jiangnan Shipyard contracts in 2022 for six LNG carriers, with the remaining five set for delivery in 2025 and 2026. The company’s comprehensive fleet modernization includes contracts for up to 23 energy-efficient vessels in 2024, including LNG carriers, Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLECs), and Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs).
These investments add over 340 years of contracted income and bolster ADNOC L&S’ ability to meet increasing global energy demand sustainably.
‘Al Shelila’ represents a deepening collaboration between ADNOC L&S and Jiangnan Shipyard. In 2020, AW Shipping—a strategic venture between ADNOC L&S and Wanhua Chemical—commissioned Jiangnan Shipyard to build five Very Large Gas Carriers. The partnership expanded in 2024 with contracts for nine VLECs and four VLACs.
Lin Ou, Chairman of Jiangnan Shipyard, commented, “Completing this LNG carrier ahead of schedule highlights Jiangnan’s shipbuilding capabilities. We look forward to continuing our strategic cooperation with ADNOC L&S to deliver future vessels on time.”
The delivery of ‘Al Shelila’ reflects ADNOC L&S’ strategic focus on sustainability, efficiency, and growth. As the company continues to modernize its fleet and expand its capabilities, it reinforces its role as a leader in the global energy maritime logistics industry.
