ExxonMobil, one of the world’s leading energy companies, has entered into an agreement to supply Hapag-Lloyd, a major global shipping company, with B30 marine biofuel oil in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region. This collaboration represents a significant step towards achieving optimal sustainability in the shipping industry.
The marine biofuel delivery in the ARA region consisted of a 0.50 percent sulphur residual-based fuel (VLSFO) that was processed with waste-based fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). The resulting blend met the ISO 8217:2017 standards, while the FAME content complied with EN 14214 regulations.
Notably, the FAME components used in the blend were ISCC-certified 2nd generation, ensuring that they do not compete for water and agricultural resources utilized for food production. This certification underscores the commitment to sustainable practices and responsible sourcing.
ExxonMobil’s biofuel, when utilized as a marine fuel, can contribute to a remarkable reduction of up to 87 percent in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to conventional fuels. This makes it an attractive and viable solution for vessel operators aiming to decrease their greenhouse gas emissions and align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goals.
Aly Abdelmotaal, Regional Marine Marketing Manager at ExxonMobil, expressed the significance of this agreement, stating, “This agreement and delivery marks an important development for both ExxonMobil and our customers. By boosting our biofuel offer, we can now further support the marine industry’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions, in line with the IMO’s stated ambitions.”
Jan Christensen, Senior Director of Global Fuel Purchasing at Hapag-Lloyd, emphasized their commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for their entire fleet by 2045 through the utilization of alternative fuels. He stated, “Bunkering ExxonMobil’s marine biofuel oil blend is yet another step towards turning our commitment into a reality.”
The adoption of marine biofuels in the shipping industry marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of maritime transportation. With ExxonMobil’s sustainable marine biofuel oil blend, companies like Hapag-Lloyd are taking concrete steps towards a greener future for the shipping industry.
