Maersk has partnered with UK-based Anemoi Marine Technologies to install a towering 35-meter rotor sail on an 8,700 TEU container vessel, marking a world-first pilot for container shipping. Scheduled for mid-2027 on North and South Atlantic routes, the wind-assisted propulsion system aims to lower fuel consumption and reduce carbon emissions. This strategic collaboration supports Maersk’s vessel efficiency goals and the maritime sector’s broader path toward the IMO’s net-zero 2050 targets.
London and Copenhagen | September 2, 2026 – In a landmark development for maritime decarbonization, global shipping leader A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has selected British innovator Anemoi Marine Technologies (Anemoi) to supply a Rotor Sail system for an 8,700 TEU Maersk Lima class container vessel.
This contract marks the world’s first installation of Rotor Sail technology on a container vessel, a vessel class crucial to global supply chains, transporting everything from consumer goods and retail products to heavy industrial equipment and components.
Technical Specifications and Operational Pilot
Under the agreement, Anemoi will design, manufacture, and deliver a fixed Rotor Sail measuring 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height. Anemoi will support Maersk throughout the engineering and installation phases to integrate the wind-harnessing system alongside existing onboard equipment.
Key details of the deployment include:
- Target Installation Date: Scheduled for mid-2027.
- Operational Route: The pilot will run during regular commercial operations, primarily across North and South Atlantic voyages.
- Core Technology: The system harnesses aerodynamic lift to generate additional forward thrust, lowering operational fuel consumption and carbon emissions in favorable wind conditions.
Expanding Beyond Dry Bulk
Incorporated in 2015, UK-based Anemoi has built a track record deploying wind-assisted propulsion across international trade routes. However, its previous commercial installations primarily targeted bulk carriers transporting raw materials and commodities. This agreement represents a key expansion into the container segment.

Fleet Efficiency and the IMO 2050 Strategy
For Maersk, testing wind-assisted propulsion serves as a practical assessment of alternative energy efficiency tools, evaluating their potential for broader fleet deployment.

The initiative coincides with growing industry momentum toward compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships, which targets net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by or around 2050.
