The steel-cutting ceremony marks a monumentally significant technical milestone for China’s state-backed shipbuilding sector and a massive scaling event for the international clean energy supply chain. Leading international classification society Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has joined the high-profile program to provide complete classification and comprehensive technical support, with six of these next-generation mega-vessels earmarked for BV class.

Often heralded as the “crown jewel” of maritime manufacturing due to the extreme thermodynamic and engineering complexities involved, these vessels represent a 57% increase in cargo capacity over mainstream 174,000 cbm conventional LNG carriers.
The mega-ships are part of a broader historic 36-ship order secured by Hudong-Zhonghua under QatarEnergy’s massive fleet expansion program. The multi-billion-dollar deal for the 24 ultra-large 271,000 cbm vessels alone shattered global maritime records for the highest total value of a single shipbuilding contract.

Propelled by high-efficiency dual-fuel internal combustion engines paired with an advanced air lubrication system and a highly refined, low-resistance hull form, the design vastly optimizes energy consumption per unit of transport capacity. The ships achieve full compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Tier III environmental standards.
Despite their unprecedented footprint, the vessels boast broad port compatibility, engineered to safely berth and discharge at more than 70 major LNG terminals globally.
