LD Armateurs launches the Spirit of Toulouse for Airbus. The methanol-ready RoRo features Norsepower rotor sails, cutting CO2 emissions by 70% per vessel.
France | February 9, 2026 – Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has officially reached a major milestone in the decarbonization of the aerospace supply chain with the launch of the Spirit of Toulouse. Launched last week at the Wuchang Shipyard (CSSC Group), the vessel is the first of three next-generation RoRo ships designed specifically to transport Airbus aircraft components across the Atlantic.
The fleet renewal, comprising the Spirit of Toulouse, Spirit of Mobile, and Spirit of Mirabel, is a central pillar in Airbus’s strategy to halve its maritime carbon footprint by 2030.

Cutting-Edge Propulsion: Wind Meets Methanol
The Spirit of Toulouse represents a “holistic” shift in marine engineering, combining traditional mechanical power with renewable energy and alternative fuels.
- Wind-Assisted Propulsion: The ship is equipped with six 35-meter tall Norsepower Rotor Sails. These Flettner rotors utilize the Magnus effect to provide significant auxiliary thrust, reducing the load on the main engines.
- Dual-Fuel Capability: The vessel features two dual-fuel engines optimized for e-methanol and bio-methanol, as well as traditional Marine Diesel Oil (MDO). This flexibility allows the fleet to scale its emissions reductions as green methanol bunkering infrastructure matures.
- AI-Driven Optimization: An advanced AI-powered control solution works in tandem with routing software to adapt to real-time weather and sea conditions. This system ensures the ship maintains the ideal aerodynamic profile to maximize wind harvest and minimize ocean drag.
Efficiency Beyond the Engine Room
Decarbonization efforts extend to the ship’s physical construction and operational software:
- Sustainable Materials: The propellers and shafts were produced using recycled steel.
- Friction Reduction: The hull is treated with ultra-low-friction anti-fouling coatings to improve hydrodynamics.
- Energy Recovery: A smart power management system and heat conversion unit capture and repurpose waste energy throughout the vessel.
Strategic Impact: Expanding Capacity, Shrinking Footprint
While the new fleet is designed to be greener, it also supports Airbus’s ambitious production ramp-up. The company aims to produce 75 A320-family aircraft per month by 2026.
| Feature | Previous Generation (Ville de Bordeaux) | Next-Gen (Spirit Series) |
| Aircraft Sets per Voyage | 3 to 4 | 6 |
| Container Capacity | 30-40 (estimated) | 70 x 40-foot containers |
| CO2 Emission Reduction | Baseline | 70% per vessel |
| Fleet-Wide CO2 Impact | Baseline | 50% reduction vs 2023 |
Operational Insight: The Spirit of Toulouse matches the cargo capacity of the Ville de Bordeaux, currently the largest in the fleet, but does so with a 70% reduction in annual CO2 emissions.
