In a major advancement toward sustainable power generation, HD Hyundai Infracore Co. (HDI), Amogy Inc., and SK Innovation Co. (SKI) have announced a strategic partnership to create a cost-effective, ammonia-to-power distributed power generation system. This collaboration unites HDI’s hydrogen engine technology with Amogy’s ammonia cracking capabilities, aiming to revolutionize South Korea’s power sector with a cleaner energy solution.

Innovative Ammonia-to-Power System

At the core of this project is HDI’s HX22 100% hydrogen engine, integrated with Amogy’s advanced ammonia cracking technology. Amogy’s process uses innovative catalyst materials that break down ammonia into hydrogen efficiently, requiring lower temperatures while ensuring high durability. By converting ammonia into hydrogen, the integrated system can deliver consistent power with reduced emissions, providing a feasible and environmentally friendly alternative for distributed power applications.

This partnership’s objective is to deliver a fully integrated, commercial-ready power generation system that can cater to the growing demand for sustainable energy in South Korea, with a specific focus on distributed power generation. This system is in line with South Korea’s Clean Hydrogen Portfolio Standard (CHPS), a recent governmental initiative aiming to expand clean hydrogen and ammonia-based power.

The three companies plan to assess the commercial viability and long-term benefits of this ammonia-to-power technology. By pooling their resources, expertise, and research, HDI, Amogy, and SKI aim to support South Korea’s energy transition objectives and help set a new standard for sustainable distributed power. This partnership demonstrates a commitment to advancing energy solutions that align with the nation’s green goals and provide a framework for broader adoption.

Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Together with HDI and SKI, we can set new standards in sustainable energy. This collaboration not only advances our mission to provide clean energy solutions but also supports South Korea’s ambitions for a cleaner, greener future. We look forward to working together to turn this innovative vision into a reality.”

HD Hyundai Infracore (HDI)

HD Hyundai Infracore has been a pioneering force in South Korea’s engine manufacturing industry since 1958, when it developed the country’s first diesel engine. HDI has since evolved into a global leader in engine manufacturing, focusing on diesel and natural gas engines, with an expanding portfolio that includes hydrogen and electrification solutions for sustainable power applications.

SK Innovation (SKI)

Founded in 1962, SK Innovation was South Korea’s first oil refining company and has since grown into a multifaceted energy corporation. A subsidiary of SK Group, SKI spans numerous sectors, including petrochemicals, lubricants, electric vehicle batteries, and more. The company’s focus on ESG principles drives its mission toward green energy and materials, supported by a vertically integrated value chain across its energy portfolio.

Amogy

Amogy is an innovative provider of carbon-free energy solutions designed to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, including maritime shipping and stationary power generation. Their patented ammonia cracking technology efficiently splits liquid ammonia to produce hydrogen, which is then used for power generation. Headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, Amogy operates in Houston, Norway, and Singapore and is backed by prominent investors such as Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, Temasek, SK Innovation, Aramco Ventures, Mitsubishi Corporation, and AP Ventures.

This strategic alliance between HDI, Amogy, and SKI marks an important step forward for South Korea’s energy sector, aligning cutting-edge technology with national sustainability goals to create a cleaner, more reliable distributed power generation system.
