SSY enters LPG and Ammonia Markets

SSY, the world’s largest independent shipbroker, has announced its strategic entry into the LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and ammonia markets, marking a significant step in supporting its global client base as the maritime industry transitions towards cleaner energy solutions.

To lead this new initiative, SSY has appointed Thorstein Bergersen, a well-respected figure in the LPG sector, as the Head of LPG. His appointment is effective immediately. Bergersen, who has previously held senior positions at prominent companies such as Yara, Ultragas, and Maersk, brings a wealth of expertise to SSY. Most recently, he served as a Partner at Navigare Capital. Joining Bergersen in this venture are experienced LPG brokers Emil Ponnert and Amit Kalhans, further strengthening the Copenhagen-based department.

The decision to enter the LPG and ammonia markets aligns with the evolving landscape of energy, driven by several macroeconomic factors. These include an increase in demand from emerging economies, a notable shift towards lower-carbon fuels, and advancements in production capabilities. As a result, LPG has gained traction as a cleaner alternative to traditional fuels, while ammonia is emerging as a promising sustainable energy carrier.

In his statement regarding his new role, Thorstein Bergersen expressed his enthusiasm “I’m delighted to be joining SSY and thrilled to be given the opportunity to establish its new LPG offering. Fueled by a rising global demand for cleaner, greener fuel solutions, we are optimistic about the outlook for both LPG and ammonia. We hope that by building a strong foundation in these markets, we can provide our existing and new clients with valuable insights and strategic support, which in turn can help them navigate opportunities and maximize value in a rapidly evolving landscape.”

Stanko Jekov, SSY Managing Partner, also commented on the announcement: “LPG has for a long time been a missing piece of the puzzle for SSY. Over the past few years, we have been monitoring the market closely to find a suitable entry point and are delighted that someone of Thorstein’s experience and knowledge has agreed to start this new venture.” He further noted that incorporating LPG and ammonia into SSY’s service offerings is a crucial milestone in the company’s growth strategy, emphasizing the exciting developments in these markets and the importance of establishing SSY as a significant player in this evolving space.
